SmartDrive AI: The Power Shift from Analog to Digital in Urban Mobility Management

In the evolving landscape of urban mobility, is analog accident reporting holding cities back from reaching their safety goals? Data-driven tools are now empowering transport authorities to take a more proactive role in traffic safety. For buses, trams, cyclists, and everyone sharing the road, smart insights can lead to targeted infrastructure improvements that make cities safer.

Analog Accident Reporting

Analog traffic accident reporting in public transport is outdated and limits the potential for meaningful improvements in urban mobility. Each public transport accident can impact numerous people—passengers, drivers, and surrounding traffic - making it essential to capture accurate, timely data. Digitizing this process not only streamlines reporting but also enables cities to collect actionable data, supporting a safer and more reliable public transport experience. By reducing reporting delays and improving data quality, digital solutions empower cities to make informed decisions, fostering a more trustworthy transit system that encourages modal shift, reduces road congestion, and supports urban sustainability goals.

SmartDrive AI - Accident Management System

SmartDrive AI is an advanced digital platform developed to streamline accident management in urban public transport systems. This initiative emphasizes real-time accident reporting, GPS-based location tracking, and integrated data analysis to identify high-risk areas, allowing decision-makers to proactively prevent future accidents. It provides targeted features for different roles:

Driver and Traffic Supervisor: Allows drivers and supervisors to report accidents with critical details such as location, people involved, and extent of damage. They can upload photos, save and continue reports as needed, and access their accident history for thorough documentation.

Accident Manager: Offers a centralized view of all reported accidents, enabling updates, trend visualization, and the ability to export reports as automatically generated PDFs for instant submission to authorities or insurance providers.

SmartDrive AI for Graz, Austria

In partnership with Graz Linien and EIT Urban Mobility, we’ve developed SmartDrive AI, a pioneering solution to improve road safety for Graz’s public transport network. Our role centers on digitizing accident documentation and applying advanced data analysis to create a safer urban environment.

Graz Linien operates an extensive fleet of 85 trams and over 170 buses, and they’re equipping drivers with tablets to facilitate real-time accident reporting. The need for digital transformation is clear: traditional analog reporting in public transport leads to delays, restricting proactive safety measures. In a city like Graz—served by 7 tram lines and 24 bus routes—vehicle traffic continues to grow, with public transport accounting for only 20% of the modal split, compared to 42% for cars (Move It Graz). Digitizing accident reporting will empower Graz with a fast, data-driven approach to address accident hotspots, improve response times, and ultimately enhance public safety.

SmartDrive AI for Sustainable Urban Mobility

SmartDrive AI is a perfect example of a data-Driven Tool. Here’s how answering key questions with data can transform accident management and create safer, more efficient urban environments.

Where are traffic accidents most frequently occurring?
Improving Urban Infrastructure
Collecting accident data with location, time and parties involved like cyclists helps improving urban infrastructure. For example, analyzing nighttime bike accidents often reveals high-risk zones that could benefit from better lighting, designated bike lanes, or reflective markings. By addressing these specific areas, transport authorities can create a safer nighttime environment for cyclists, promoting a more inclusive mobility ecosystem that considers all city dwellers, even after dark.

During which days of the week and hours are traffic accidents most common?
Understanding Peak Accident Times
Patterns in accidents by day and hour inform strategic decisions about infrastructure and resource deployment. High-traffic periods might be met with adaptive traffic lights, speed adjustments, or cameras at key locations. This time-sensitive approach enables authorities to lower accident risks during peak times, aligning with a broader vision of smarter, safer urban movement.

What types of traffic accidents are most prevalent on each line?
Adapting Infrastructure to Accident Types
Each public transport line has its own accident profile. With insights into the most common types of incidents, authorities can implement targeted infrastructure solutions—such as barriers, wider lanes, or improved crossings—exactly where they’re needed. These tailored enhancements help prevent specific accident types, boosting urban transit safety and resilience.

How frequently do traffic accidents involving injuries occur?
Prioritizing Injury-Related Accident Hotspots
Tracking injury-related accidents doesn’t just support emergency response; it also helps identify areas in need of extra safety features like guardrails or protective barriers. By placing emergency resources where they’re needed most and enhancing infrastructure in key locations, cities create a safer, more reliable public transit system.

Which line and direction of the public transport mode experience the highest number of traffic accidents?
Identifying High-Risk Routes and Directions
With data highlighting which bus and tram lines see the most accidents, transport authorities can prioritize safety measures where they’re needed most. Infrastructure improvements like clearer signage, lane markings, or enhanced lighting can make a critical difference, creating safer routes for drivers and passengers alike. This targeted approach brings cities closer to a vision of smarter, safer urban mobility.

By leveraging these data insights, cities can transform how they manage accidents—moving from reactive measures to proactive, strategic safety improvements. With every insight, transport authorities can make targeted infrastructure decisions that reduce risks and enhance the safety and efficiency of urban mobility for all. The journey toward smarter cities isn’t just about technology; it’s about harnessing data to create an urban landscape that actively prevents accidents and promotes well-being for everyone on the road.

Ready to move beyond outdated processes? With SmartDrive AI, your city can lead the way toward proactive safety and smarter urban mobility. Reach out to explore the possibilities!
