Relief Map

A relief map uses shading, color tinting, or three-dimensional rendering to convey the shape of the Earth’s surface. The most common technique is analytical hillshading, which computes how a hypothetical light source—traditionally positioned from the northwest—would illuminate terrain derived from a digital elevation model. Slopes facing the light appear bright, while opposite slopes fall into shadow, producing a remarkably realistic depiction of mountains, valleys, and plateaus. Relief maps can stand alone or serve as an underlying layer beneath other thematic data.
