Proportional Symbol Map

A proportional symbol map is a cartographic technique in which symbols, typically circles, are drawn at point locations with their size proportional to the underlying data value. Unlike choropleth maps that shade entire regions, proportional symbol maps preserve precise geographic location while communicating magnitude, making them effective for comparing values that are tied to discrete places such as cities, monitoring stations, or facilities. Proportional symbol maps can use absolute scaling, where symbol area corresponds directly to data values, or range-graded scaling, where values are grouped into classes.
