Contour Map
A contour map uses isolines to connect points of equal elevation, creating a pattern that reveals the shape of the terrain. Contour maps are fundamental in geography, civil engineering, and outdoor navigation.
A contour map displays the three-dimensional shape of terrain on a two-dimensional surface through contour lines—curves where every point shares the same elevation value. The vertical distance between successive contour lines is called the contour interval, and it is held constant across the map so that closely spaced lines indicate steep slopes and widely spaced lines indicate flat or gently sloping areas. Contour maps emerged in the 18th century and became the standard method for depicting topography on paper maps. Index contours, drawn thicker and labeled with their elevation, appear at regular intervals to aid reading. Supplementary contours at half or quarter intervals may be added in flat terrain where the standard interval provides insufficient detail. Depression contours, marked with tick marks pointing downslope, indicate enclosed low areas like craters or sinkholes.
