Map Inset
A map inset is a smaller supplementary map placed within or alongside the main map to provide additional context, such as an overview of the broader region or a detailed zoom into a specific area of interest.
A map inset is a secondary map panel embedded within a larger map layoutMap LayoutA map layout is the arrangement of all visual elements—map frame, legend, scale bar, north arrow, title, and source c... to supply context that the main map cannot efficiently convey at its chosen scale and extent. The two most common types are locator insets, which show where the main map area sits within a broader region or country, and detail insets, which magnify a congested or important area to reveal features that are too small at the main map’s scale. Insets are especially valuable when mapping non-contiguous territories. For instance, maps of the United States frequently use insets for Alaska and Hawaii, which would otherwise distort the layout if shown at the same scale as the lower 48 states. Similarly, urban-area maps may inset a downtown core that contains dense point data, while the main map covers the wider metropolitan area. Good inset design uses a clearly marked extent rectangle on the main map that corresponds to the inset’s coverage, distinct border styling to separate it from the main map, and a scale barScale BarA scale bar is a graphic element on a map that visually indicates the relationship between distance on the map and ac... within the inset when it differs from the main map scaleMap ScaleMap scale defines the ratio between distances on a map and corresponding distances on the Earth's surface.
